time for
a change

There is always a latest and greatest fad when it comes to health — a new way of eating that will transform your body and well-being forever. Maybe you’ve experienced this yourself, dropping tons of dough on health products that don’t actually bring noticeable results?

Perhaps your cupboard is chock-full of capsules and powder that don’t live up to their marketing hype. The founders of Four Sigmatic certainly experienced this themselves, and it was this frustration and lack of truly educated information that led us to build this company.

Four Sigmatic was founded with the goal of cutting through all of the hype and helping people eat more of the world’s most scientifically studied superfoods, like mushrooms. We wanted to make these incredibly powerful foods taste better and be easier to use, so that they can be simply incorporated to upgrade your existing habits. In other words, no more fads, no more pills, and no more capsules.

Our first mission in accomplishing this was to popularize drinking (yes, drinking) mushrooms.

the great mushroom

When we founded Four Sigmatic, our first goal was to find the smallest thing people could add to their current diet to produce the biggest positive impact on their health. For us, the answer was obvious: medicinal mushrooms.

We know, we know. Mushrooms aren’t the first thing most people think about when it comes to health. And they’re definitely not as sexy as many of the health plans out there today. Most people connect the word "mushroom" with either psychedelics or common culinary mushrooms like Portobello.

Here’s something we bet you didn’t know about mushrooms: they are among the world’s most studied superfoods.

In fact, mushrooms impact the world of Western health in a big way ... even though most people are completely unaware of how integral this super fungi is to our healthcare system. Get a load of this: About 40 percent of Western medicines today, including penicillin, utilize mushrooms.

Because mushrooms are so integral to clinical practices, thousands of studies have been conducted and papers have been written testifying to their incredible healing properties—to date, 1,100 papers have been published on just one single type of mushroom, of which there are more than 10,000 known varieties in North America alone.

Interestingly, most people don’t consume these healthy types of mushrooms, so adding even small amounts could lead to significant health benefits. During the last couple of generations, mushrooms have suffered from severe food racism, despite the fact that they are suitable to almost any diet, from Paleo to vegan. Enough of the hating ... start ‘shrooming!

It’s time to go back to our roots. Indigenous cultures have been incorporating mushrooms into their diets in both solid and liquid form for thousands of years; it’s part of ancient survival wisdom in cultures across the world. Yup, mushrooms are the original superfood.

Our name is a super geeky way of saying that our company represents only the fifty most researched foods. In science—and especially in the natural sciences—a large enough sample size will usually form a natural distribution. So, if, for example, you compare the nutrient density of all foods, you will see a bell curve form. If you take four standard deviation from the mean, you will have the four sigma foods. These foods are more nutrient dense than 99.9999 percent of all food options.

That’s us! The Four Sigmatic core team has known each other for years. Most of our team members were actually roommates in college. We left our well-paid corporate jobs with the likes of Google, Citibank, and Hewlett-Packard to work on behalf of the great mushroom.

Our Mushroom Mission began in the Nordic countries in 2012 and, with the help of our innovative products, we have expanded to more than twenty-five countries in less than four years. In 2014, we relocated our business headquarters to the U.S. Our products launched in the U.S. in January 2015, and it has been quite a journey since then. We’re still a small employee-owned startup … but good things come in small packages, and we truly believe our passion and hard work will help us continue to make a real difference in global health.

giving back

We believe that our products can and will make a significant social contribution simply based on their day-to-day health benefits. But we also want to give back in another way: Whenever you buy any of our mushroom boxes, we will put a portion of the proceeds toward providing free mushroom kits for cancer patients. These Contribution Kits, as we like to call them, include more than $1,500 worth of mushrooms for patients. The current version of the Contribution Kit includes dual-extracted chaga, reishi, shiitake, maitake, and turkey tail mushrooms.

This year 564,800 people are expected to die of cancer in the United States alone. That’s more than 1,500 lives lost per day. Cancer is clearly one of the biggest health crises of our time. Fungi are involved in the industrial processing of about half of the most profitable products used in human medicine, and medicinal mushrooms have been particularly widely studied for potential cancer treatment. Even though much more research is needed, many top cancer organizations and hospitals recommend their use as an alternative or complimentary treatment.

To distribute the kits we've partnered up with Boarding 4 Breast Cancer (B4BC), a 501(c)3 non-profit foundation focused on breast cancer prevention. Through two decades, B4BC has been educating people, raising funds, and giving back to local communities and research-based organizations. They organise rad events and do their best to help raise the awareness of cancer prevention, which is why we wanted to work with them. Plus they are super nice people. Visit their site to learn more about their work and how to get engaged.

We also donate Contribution Kits to non-breast cancer patients and survivors. If you, or someone you know, is interested you can apply here.
