A Morning Elixir For Kicking that Pesky Cold

When the common cold strikes, your immune system needs some assistance. The following recipe supports your immune system thanks to mushroom coffee (which is packed with antioxidant properties and immune-system-supporting mushrooms), turmeric (which has antioxidant, and possibly antibacterial and antiviral properties), and cinnamon (which may have antioxidant, and antibacterial effects).

  • 2 cups Ground Mushroom Coffee

  • 2 Tbsp allspice
  • ¼ tsp turmeric

  • Nut milk of choice (optional)

  • Mix all ingredients together in the French press. Add filtered water.
  • Let sit overnight in the fridge.
  • Press and pour.
  • Add a little nut milk, if desired. Enjoy!

A Morning Elixir For Zapping Fatigue
Cordyceps is known as a way to support steady energy levels without caffeine. The mushroom has been shown to increase levels of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which is the body’s primary energy supply source. Meanwhile, the beta-glucans in cordyceps help distribute oxygen throughout the body’s cells, further supporting steady energy levels and stamina.

This recipe contains all these benefits and then some. We’ve also added coconut water to replenish electrolytes and hydrate the body, further ensuring that your body can operate on all cylinders. If you’re looking for an energizing pre-workout drink or just need a quick dose of energy, turn to this uber-convenient recipe.

Cordyceps Cubes with Coconut Water

Ingredients:

Instructions:

  • In a measuring cup with a spout, stir the cordyceps extract into the coconut water until completely dissolved.
  • Pour the mixture into the wells of a 12-cube ice cube tray and freeze until solid, 8 to 12 hours.
  • To serve, add 4 to 6 cordyceps ice cubes to a glass of coconut water (or beverage of choice). Enjoy slowly, allowing the ice to fully melt into the drink.
  • We recommend making a tray of these cubes and storing them in a freezer bag so you can repeat the process and always have a supply of cordyceps cubes on hand.

More and more research points to the importance of gut health for overall health. What you eat has a major impact on your gut, and that can have big consequences for the way you feel overall, from your stress levels to your digestive function. Because functional mushrooms are adaptogenic, they can help balance and restore gut function—so we’ve made sure to include good-for-you mushrooms in both of these recipes. The first recipe also features gut-friendly coconut and MCT-oil, while the second recipe features fiber-rich pumpkin for healthier digestion.

A Morning Elixir for Supporting Occasional Stress and Anxiety
Most of the time, coffee is associated with an uptick in anxiety for people who are already prone to high levels of stress. But when you add functional mushrooms to the mix, the brew can have the opposite effect. That’s because mushrooms are adaptogenic, which means they support occasional stress. They also eradicate that jittery feeling that can arise from drinking coffee sans mushrooms.

This recipe allows you to enjoy the energizing effects of caffeine and support occasional stress with adaptogenic mushrooms. The addition of ashwagandha enhances this brew’s benefits by relieving anxiety.

A Morning Elixir for When Your Muscles Feel Sore
If you’ve been hitting the gym hard, your muscles are probably feeling it, which can make it harder to keep your intensity high when you exercise again. This recipe helps support muscle recovery thanks to a substance called citrulline, which exists in large quantities in watermelon. The compound is thought to stimulate blood flow to sore muscles, thereby aiding recovery. Watermelon also boasts other muscular benefits: Because it’s over 90 percent water, the fruit is supremely hydrating, which further supports muscle recovery and function. Meanwhile, cordyceps mushrooms help you power through another tough workout (cranky muscles be darned) by supporting steady energy levels.

      Watermelon Cordyceps Energizer

      Ingredients:

      • ½ small watermelon (about 5 cups)
      • ½ pound strawberries, hulled
      • 1 tsp (about 2 grams) cordyceps extract powder
      • 1-inch piece ginger, peeled
      • 10 ice cubes

      Instructions:

      • Using a sharp knife, slice all the flesh (including a good bit of the white rind) from the watermelon skin. Because much of watermelon’s citrulline is concentrated in the rind, this will ensure you enjoy the substance’s benefits.
      • Add all the ingredients to a blender or Vitamix and blend on high for about 30 seconds, until smooth.
      • Pour into glasses and serve.

A Morning Elixir for General Immune Support

The following recipe is chock full of nutritious ingredients. It’s loaded with chaga mushrooms, which have been shown to help support your immune system, restore balance to other bodily systems, and help fight support your body’s natural reactions to inflammation. This recipe also calls for homemade chai (so you don’t expose your body to the inflammatory sugars found in most prepackaged chai blends) as well as anti-inflammatory nut milk, cinnamon, and ginger.

      Chaga Chai

      Ingredients:

      • 1 2-inch piece of fresh ginger (or more if desired), peeled and thinly sliced
      • 10 whole cloves
      • 5 cardamom pods
      • 2 cinnamon sticks
      • 2 tsp whole black peppercorns
      • 2 cups nut milk of your choice
      • 1 tsp chaga extract
      • 2 Tbsp coconut palm sugar

      Instructions:

      • In a medium saucepan, combine the ginger, cloves, cardamom, cinnamon sticks, peppercorns, and 6 cups water.
      • Bring to a boil over medium heat. Boil for 1 minute, then cover and reduce the heat to low. Simmer for about 10 minutes.
      • Add the nut milk, chaga extract, and coconut palm sugar. Return to a simmer and cook, whisking gently, until the sugar has dissolved.
      • Strain into mugs and serve immediately.
